Artist Statement
MEDIUM: COTTON FABRIC + WATERBASE INK | 2023- NOVEMBER | 8" X 10.5"
Camellia is a flower that originates from tropical and subtropical areas in eastern and southern Asia. My inspiration for this collection came from my mom, as this is one of her favourite flowers, as well as the legend Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel.
The Camellia symbolises faithfulness and longevity and a profound meaning of romantic love, devotion, adoration and care. In China, this flower symbolises two lovers where the petals represent the woman, and the calyx (the green leafy part) represents the man. Also known as the Chinese rose of winter, the camellia blooms in the winter yet never loses its leaves. In Japan, the flower represents a spirit of depth, self-reflection and inner strength and qualities that are highly esteemed in Japanese culture. They also symbolise love, loyalty and humility and are perfect for expressing gratitude towards family and friends.
After research, I have decided to choose the colours of Berry / Wine Red, Pine Grove Green, and Honey Gold, using the three colours to collaborate and combine. Create a mysterious, elegant, romantic, and flamboyant atmosphere.
